I spoke with Smith about how you can use these techniques too to help drop those unwanted pounds. Here’s what she had to say I have always been very athletic and active, so when I began gaining weight in my mid-30s, it was really frustrating.

The first thing I tried was counting calories. This was probably my biggest mistake as far as dieting goes because while it helped me lose weight initially, I couldn’t maintain it forever and eventually gained back more than half of what I lost when I stopped counting calories altogether.
How did you achieve your target weight?
I started taking a pill called Hydroxycut, which is an appetite suppressant. I also combined it with diet and exercise. In order to make my weight loss permanent, I changed my eating habits and stopped eating all processed food products. Now, I only eat fruits and vegetables that are in season or natural sources of sugar. I try to drink as much water as possible. When I feel hungry, I drink a glass of water instead of eating something unhealthy.
I’ve been exercising since I was 16 years old so it has always been part of my life. When you combine diet and exercise together you will see results faster than doing one without the other! It took me about six months to reach my goal weight by combining these two things together consistently!

I wish I had known that to lose weight properly you need to be an athlete and exercise every day. Plus, it’s not just about dieting. Even in my best shape ever (while on a movie set), I’ve never eaten so many fresh fruits and vegetables in my life.
I also wish I knew how important it was to have support from friends and family when trying to lose weight. It’s tough enough trying to change your lifestyle without having naysayers around who is constantly reminding you of all your past failures. The people closest to me were a huge help because they made me feel like I could do anything if I put my mind to it and helped me celebrate all my successes along the way. They were great cheerleaders!
What Are Some Health Benefits You Can Expect From Weight Loss?
A 2011 study of more than one million people found that those who lost just 5 percent of their body weight had a 50 percent lower risk of developing diabetes over 10 years compared to those whose weight remained stable. Additionally, they were less likely to die from any cause. Many of my patients report significant improvement in physical mobility, flexibility, and overall well-being after achieving a small amount of weight loss. For most, just 5 to 10 pounds is enough to make them feel better, healthier, and more energetic.
The benefits don’t stop there. One review of clinical trials by scientists at UC Davis concluded that exercise training was more effective when it came to reducing body fat and building lean muscle mass than dieting alone. In fact, many participants’ weights actually increased while on a calorie-restricted diet but decreased when they added exercise to their regimen without making any other changes.
Do You Exercise on a Regular Basis?
A healthy, consistent exercise routine is one of many ways to lose weight, but only if you enjoy it. (If you don’t like exercising, chances are you won’t keep it up and you may even gain a few pounds back.) Do what exercises and activities appeal to you: If that’s running and hiking, then go for it! If yoga appeals to your inner zen master more than hardcore cardio workouts do, then try some gentle flow classes instead.
What Advice Would You Give Others Who Want to Lose Weight?
Always remember that you are in control of your own destiny. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight is about making good choices. We all have our bad days, but don’t let one day (or more) of unhealthy decisions get you down. Learn from it and make better choices next time. She does it as much as possible. She said she used to do it for about an hour every day, but now that she’s in her late 50s, she does 20 minutes three days a week. I’m always moving my body and working on my flexibility, even when I’m not doing my workout video, she told me. You have to keep your body moving to stay fit and youthful. What does she eat?: Protein-rich foods like eggs and chicken are staples of her diet.
I also love Greek yogurt with berries or some granola sprinkled on top, she says. For breakfast one morning last week, I had two scrambled eggs with feta cheese and black olives (my favorite) with a slice of whole-wheat toast spread with almond butter and tea.
What are Your Tricks/tips to Keep in Shape?
Well, I’m not a trickster. I’m just getting older and have to move more deliberately and in smaller increments these days. So, my trick is to simply walk three times a week and do short, full-body strength training sessions at home twice a week. With those activities as my pillars, I don’t go off track too much because it just doesn’t take that much effort to maintain what feels like an optimal level of wellness for me.
